Kedagi ei tohi käsitada kuriteos süüdi olevana enne, kui tema kohta on jõustunud süüdimõistev kohtuotsus. Keegi ei ole kriminaalmenetluses kohustatud oma süütust tõendama. Kedagi ei tohi sundida tunnistama iseenda või oma lähedaste vastu.
