Die Glaubens- und Gewissensfreiheit, sowie die freie Ausübung gottesdienstlicher Handlungen werden nach Massgabe der Artikel 49–53 der Bundesverfassung vom 29. Mai 1874 gewährleistet. [BS 1 3]. Den genannten Bestimmungen entsprechen heute die Art. 7, 15, 72 und 122 der BV vom 18. April 1999 (SR 101).
