Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023

Write the words of this act the way you think they should read. Solon shows your change as a redline against the published text and pins it to that exact text, so it can never be applied to wording you did not see.

56 Designated persons and funding

(1) The Secretary of State may, by regulations, designate a person for the purposes of this Part if the Secretary of State is satisfied that the person would make a significant contribution to the performance of the functions which are imposed by sections 49, 50 and 52. (2) When deciding whether to designate a person, the Secretary of State must— (a) have regard to whether the person is supported by different communities in Northern Ireland and will act independently of the influence of any other persons; and (b) consult relevant organisations about the proposed designation. (3) Regulations under this section may provide— (a) that a power of direction is not to be exercised to give a designated person, a member or officer of that person, or any staff assisting that person, a direction relating to functions under this Part; (b) for the staff assisting a designated person to assist in the exercise of the person’s functions under this Part; (c) that a designated person is required to perform only a particular function or an aspect of a function. (4) Regulations under this section are subject to negative procedure. (5) The Secretary of State may make payments or provide other resources to, or in respect of, the designated persons in connection with the exercise of functions under this Part.

One line that says what changes, such as "Halve the dog tax".

Who it helps, what it costs, what it fixes. It is what persuades people to support it.

A proposal here is not law. Support on Solon is evidence that people want the change; the official route says what it takes to make it law.

Ask what your change would do, who would gain and who would bear a cost, and where something like it is already law. The assistant reads your draft as it stands, cites the law and the studies it finds, and takes no side. What you file stays yours.
