1 Rum ist eine Spirituose, die ausschliesslich durch alkoholische Gärung und Destillation von Melasse oder Sirup, die aus der Herstellung von Rohrzucker stammen, oder des Safts des Zuckerrohrs selbst gewonnen und zu weniger als 96 Volumenprozent so destilliert wird, dass das Destillat in wahrnehmbarem Mass die besonderen sensorischen Eigenschaften von Rum aufweist.
2 Wird er ausschliesslich durch alkoholische Gärung und Destillation von Zuckerrohrsaft gewonnen, so muss er die aromatischen Merkmale von Rum sowie einen Gehalt an flüchtigen Bestandteilen von mindestens 225 g/hl reinen Alkohols aufweisen.
