Plant Varieties Act 1997

Write the words of this act the way you think they should read. Solon shows your change as a redline against the published text and pins it to that exact text, so it can never be applied to wording you did not see.

1 Plant breeders’ rights.

(1) Rights, to be known as plant breeders’ rights, may be granted in accordance with this Part of this Act. (2) Plant breeders’ rights may subsist in varieties of all plant genera and species. (3) For the purposes of this Act, “variety” means a plant grouping within a single botanical taxon of the lowest known rank, which grouping, irrespective of whether the conditions for the grant of plant breeders’ rights (which are laid down in section 4 below) are met, can be— (a) defined by the expression of the characteristics resulting from a given genotype or combination of genotypes, (b) distinguished from any other plant grouping by the expression of at least one of those characteristics, and (c) considered as a unit with regard to its suitability for being propagated unchanged.

One line that says what changes, such as "Halve the dog tax".

Who it helps, what it costs, what it fixes. It is what persuades people to support it.

A proposal here is not law. Support on Solon is evidence that people want the change; the official route says what it takes to make it law.

Ask what your change would do, who would gain and who would bear a cost, and where something like it is already law. The assistant reads your draft as it stands, cites the law and the studies it finds, and takes no side. What you file stays yours.
