International Development Act 2002

Write the words of this act the way you think they should read. Solon shows your change as a redline against the published text and pins it to that exact text, so it can never be applied to wording you did not see.

(1) The Minister may with a view to preparing for or facilitating the exercise of the applicable powers— (a) enter into arrangements with any person or body (including arrangements to provide assistance), or (b) carry on any other activities. (1A) In subsection (1) “the applicable powers” means— (a) where the Minister is the Secretary of State, the powers under section 1, 2 or 3, and (b) where the Minister is the Treasury, the power under section 1. (2) The Minister may— (a) support, by way of subscription or otherwise, any organisation that exists (wholly or partly) for one or more relevant purposes, (b) contribute to any fund that is intended to be used (wholly or partly) for one or more relevant purposes, or (c) promote, or assist any person or body to promote, awareness of global poverty and of the means of reducing such poverty, if the Minister is satisfied that to do so is likely to contribute to a reduction in poverty. (4) For the purposes of subsection (2) “relevant purpose” means— (a) where the Minister is the Secretary of State— (i) a purpose mentioned in section 1(2)(a) or (b) or 3, or (ii) a purpose that broadly corresponds to that purpose, and (b) where the Minister is the Treasury— (i) a purpose mentioned in section 1(2)(a) or (b), or (ii) a purpose that broadly corresponds to that purpose.

One line that says what changes, such as "Halve the dog tax".

Who it helps, what it costs, what it fixes. It is what persuades people to support it.

A proposal here is not law. Support on Solon is evidence that people want the change; the official route says what it takes to make it law.

Ask what your change would do, who would gain and who would bear a cost, and where something like it is already law. The assistant reads your draft as it stands, cites the law and the studies it finds, and takes no side. What you file stays yours.
